    Nano Materials and Heterogeneous Catalysis
    Outcome of The Visit

Two Indian institutions namely MANIT, Bhopal (M.P.) and DCRUST, Murthal (Haryana) are partners of the present SPARC project. Prof. Paul A. Wright of University of St. Andrews (STAN) visited both the Institutions and held discussions on the ongoing research. He taught a 16 lectures course on Nano Materials and Heterogeneous Catalysis at MANIT and delivered lectures on 'Nanoporous Solids and their Role in Sustainable Chemistry' at DCRUST.
At both the centres the research works carried out under the project were discussed. At MANIT the results on the adsorption of the dye Methylene Blue over meso porous carbon prepared at STAN were discussed. At DCRUST the characterization results obtained by the student during 3 months stay at STAN were discussed. A future strategy for publishing monograph and organizing the workshop in the year 2020 was also discussed.

    Characterization of Materials
    Outcome of The Visit

During the visit Dr. Baker taught a course on Characterization of Materials to the PG/PhD students of Department of Chemistry and other departments of MANIT, Bhopal. Faculty of the department also attended the course. Total 24 hours of teaching was made by Dr. Baker covering almost all the aspects of techniques involved in the characterization of materials. Every day the PIs and Co-PI of the SPARC project along with the PhD student held a meeting of the project group and discussed about the ongoing research. During this visit of Dr. Baker, we could prepare the framework of total four research papers. The characterization work related to these research papers is to be carried out at St. Andrews and Dr. Baker has taken the concerned samples along with him. These papers will be communicated soon.

    Workshop Overview

This five days workshop was designed to explain overview on various types of adsorbents and adsorption phenomenon at large. Experts provided in-depth information on the modern catalytic degradation processes.
Primary objective of this workshop was to introduce participants with chemistry associated with adsorption phenomenon, some advanced materials used as adsorbents and catalytic degradation. Each day experts delivered lectures and/or organized any activity for better learning concepts of the subject.
During the workshop following was taught to the participants:
    1. Various adsorbents, their preparation, characterization and applications.
    2. Batch and bulk adsorption, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, column operations etc.
    3. Use of various adsorption isotherm models as diagnostic tool to explain adsorption patterns and behaviours.
    4. Applications of adsorption isotherm models to determine thermodynamic parameters useful to understand intricacies of adsorption process.
    5. Theoretical and experimental aspects of catalytic degradation along with recent trends and applications.
In addition to above all participants were involved in computational activity to plot graphs of various isotherm models. This activity helped them in understanding phenomenon of isotherms and their practical applications for various adsorption processes. One day was also devoted for the visit of a water treatment plant of Bhopal Municipal Corporation and also to understand process of adsorption in ancient technologies at Rashtriya Manav Sanghraylaya (Museum of Man), Bhopal.
