    Workshop Overview

    An International workshop/webinar on Sustainable Materials For Optoelectronics & Bio-Sensors was jointly organized by the Department of Physics & Department of Mechanical Engineering under the SPARC project from August 26, 2020, to August 28, 2020. The workshop was attended by scientists, professors, and students on MS Teams from different parts of India as well as from abroad. The workshop included lectures and discussion sessions. The topics included Modulation of photoconduction by nanostructures in organic layers and Sustainable bio-mimetic nanophotonics. The workshop was very much appreciated by the participants.

    Workshop Overview

    Peoples around the globe working on advanced materials have always been concerned about the major challenges that our planet faces right now. It is no secret that climate change and the deterioration of the environment are perhaps the biggest challenges that humankind has ever faced. There is an urgent need for the world to move towards achieving sustainability and make efforts to conserve environment. With these great challenges that the world faces, it is absolutely imperative that the sphere of science and research resolves and brings about solutions for the world to come over these problems. We believe that the right use of modern technology coupled with optimum and appropriate research can prove to be useful in tackling these problems effectively. In recent years, the application of hybrid materials in environmental protection has attracted the attention of many scientific groups. Due to the fact that the properties of the organic-inorganic or inorganic-organic composite materials are not just the result of the individual contributions of their components, but also from the strong synergy produced by a hybrid interface, they have found numerous applications in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, material science, and environmental protection. As an example, it can find specific areas of interest, including the preparation of high capacity composite materials for the selective removal and recovery of heavy metal ions as well as removal of radionuclides from waters and wastewaters, design of composite materials with controlled pore dimensions for the selective removal of organic contaminants or synthesis of modified nanoporous composite materials for the decomposition of specific pollutants.
    With this perspective, the objective of this webinar is to explore possible ways to continue teaching through online mode, exchange of knowledge on hybrid materials and their application in the environmental protection of Materials will cover recent progress, novelties, and important findings regarding these unique materials and keep the student motivated without compromising on the quality of research and teaching.

    The Internet of Things (IoT) has allowed systems across the globe to store and process information, so that they can access it in future. Nonetheless, due to the relatively long gap in collecting data and the ability in processing and analyzing it, this prospective is still not explored. We explained the vital role that sensors play in IoT to aid in discovering what possibilities ought to be addressed to make the data more meaningful. Over the last few years, apart from promoting IoT communication, the variety of tests that can be carried out using Point of care testing (POCT) devices has grown substantially. Reliable and efficient points of care diagnoses are capable of revolutionizing public health care. Most of the POCT devices used today use electrochemical sensors. Hence, some of the pre-existing techniques in electrochemistry such as potentiometry, amperometry, conductimetry and impedimetry used to design and develop POCT devices have been reviewed in depth in this chapter. The advancement and findings of biosensors connecting the biological and engineering sciences are perhaps one of the most interesting scientific fields today. Semiconductor-based technology is evolving so much that we are now seeing a swift influx of advanced sensors based on the latest nanotechnology innovations. We highlighted the applicability of biosensing field effect transistor (FET) technology with a specific emphasis on the progress being made in integrating existing FET technology and nanotechnology, using semiconductor nanowires and organic structures. Biosensor development is currently not just powering the fast race to build compact, speedy, affordable, and even more effective sensors, but could potentially lead to the full implementation of electronic and biological systems together.
