Workshop Overview
Sustainable use of groundwater is becoming increasingly critical in India and requires effective participation from local communities along with technical, social, economic, policy and political inputs. Access to groundwater for farming communities is also an emotional and complex issue as their livelihood and survival depend on it. We proposed a transdisciplinary approach to understanding the issues, challenges and options for improving the sustainability of groundwater use in the states of Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Gujarat. We will extend the approach of a recently completed project in Rajasthan, called Managed Aquifer Recharge through Village level Intervention (MARVI) to the proposed states with different climatic conditions. The focus of the SPARC project is develop village level groundwater management through field testing of the MARVI approach and to build capacity of partner universities in transdisciplinary teaching and research. The expected outcomes of the proposal include the development of an integrated model for sustainable groundwater management; development of a collaborative multi-university undergraduate teaching and post-graduate research program in integrated water resources management; and a monograph titled âÃÂÃÂTransdisciplinary Approach to Groundwater ManagementâÃÂÃÂ
