    Optimization: Scope, Methods, Challenges, and Directions for Practical Problem Solving (Institute Lecture)
    Outcome of The Visit

    (1) He initiated the discussions with Dean (International Relations) for an MoU between Michigan State University, USA and IIT Roorkee. Prof. Deb also started the documentation of collaboration terms between the two Institutes.
    (2) He started the research activities for the SPARC project along with a full-time research scholar dedicatedly working on this project.
    (3) Detailed planning regarding offering a course and conducting the workshop in November 2019.
    (4) He gave an Institute open lecture on 24th July in IIT Roorkee which received immense interest from both faculty and students.
    (5) He started a collaboration with another faculty Prof. Kusum Deep (Dept. of Mathematics) and delivered another guest lecture.

    Workshop Overview

    This workshop brings together key and eminent National and International researchers in the area of Computational Intelligence (CI) under one roof, on a single day, at the Greater-Noida Campus of IIT Roorkee, to showcase their latest research and application results.     This book is an outcome of the SPARC project, funded by the Government of India, between the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India, and Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, USA. This project was envisioned to explore the immense potential for ML-based enhancements in the EMO domain. The motivation for this project was rooted in the recognition that an EMO algorithm can be viewed as a time-varying process in which a population of solutions, starting at random regions in the search space, gradually migrates towards the optimal regions. Hence, the chronological populations of solution vectors can be considered as time- series data, which if analyzed through ML methods, can help to capture efficient search directions, which in turn could be utilized to improve the search efficiency of an EMO algorithm. Notably, the successful accomplishment of the SPARC project's goals paved the way for this book, in that, the project's key deliverables constitute some of the core chapters in this book. Toward a more holistic perspective, and wider appeal to both the novice in the EMO domain, and the experienced researchers and practitioners, this book discusses the fundamental concepts associated with optimization (problem and algorithm types) sufficiently, and includes existing studies beyond the project, including some of the preceding and most recent ones. In doing so, the chapters in this book cover ML interventions in all three phases related to the use of an EMO algorithm, namely, the search phase, post-optimality phase, and decision-making phase.
